This recognition was created by the United Nations to celebrate the cultures of indigenous people around the world. Indigenous Peoples are distinct social and cultural groups that share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural resources where they live, occupy or from which they have been displaced. Observance of International Day promotes international awareness of issues of concerns (e.g., Indigenous peoples are nearly three times as likely to be living in extreme poverty compared to their non-indigenous counterparts. Globally, 47% of all indigenous peoples in employment have no education, compared to 17% of their non-indigenous counterparts. This gap is even wider for women.). This day is a great opportunity to educate the general public, mobilize recourses to address global problems, and celebrate achievements of humanity. Do any of your students belong to an indigenous population? If so, use this day as an opportunity to learn more about their cultures and beliefs. Are there ways that we as educators can better support Indigenous people?
