Diversity Awareness Month

Given the current political climate and recent federal and state-level legislative changes, now is the time more than ever for students and faculty and staff members like us to emphasize the importance of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our environmental settings at the course, department, program, school/college, center/institute, and organization/institution levels. At some point during this month of August, which is Diversity Awareness Month, just take five minutes to reflect on the myriad attributes that make you who you are—that make you uniquely…well…YOU! Consider the very real fact that there never was and never will be another YOU. Let that realization sink in, and you will begin to internalize for yourself how important your lived experiences and perspectives are for your environmental settings, especially when you share them with others. Then, you may also realize just how important everyone else’s lived experiences and perspectives are as well. When we pool together all of our lived experiences in this organization, for example, we can enhance each other’s cultural awareness and competence and empower one another to champion the ideals and passions of each other. Through discussions, forums, and collaborations, we can learn about, from, and with one another in a way that engenders a sense of belonging for us all. We, on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the AACA hope that you find a diverse home in this organization, and we hope that you help us in making it even more diverse, more inclusive, and more equitable for all members. The more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, the better!
