Women’s History Month

Posted on Mar. 8, 2024  /  0

What began in 1978 as a local week-long celebration of women in Santa Rosa, California, quickly gained momentum and became a nationally recognized month-long celebration in 1987. March was chosen as it corresponded with International Women’s Day (celebrated March 8, 2024). Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. The 2024 theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” and recognizes women (past and present) who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our institutions. There are many ways to celebrate Women’s History Month: gift feminist treat boxes (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/558164947567900317/), share powerful feminist quotes (https://unexpectedvirtualtours.com/womens-history-month-quotes/), explore this online exhibit “Girlhood- it’s complicated”(https://americanhistory.si.edu/girlhood) and more! Here are some facts that might surprise you: Women comprise just 4.6% of the Global 500 CEO list. Throughout all of US history, only 3.1% of all members of Congress have been women.  According to the 2020 US Census Data, the US population is 49.5% male and 50.5% female. Meanwhile, a study evaluating images found in surgical textbooks found that when images of sex specific genitalia and breasts are excluded, surgical textbook images are 62.9% male and 37.1% female (Anderton et al., 2023). Thus, as educators, increasing representation of various genders in our lectures may more accurately depict gender diversity and increase inclusivity in our classrooms. Please share with us ways in which you celebrate women! And let’s continue celebrating and honoring women beyond the month of March.
